Hi Cyrus, this is a great post and I actually already got some insight into some issues with some of my pages that get high impressions but have a low CTR, but let me just understand something correctly. The Followerwonk bio page had a very low CTR, but very high impressions, so you looked at the bio page itself and saw that there was very little text explaining what was actually on the page. You are implying that users are pogosticking back to the SERP, because they are not satisfied with what they saw on the page, am I right? However, wouldn’t that imply that they are clicking through to see what the page has to offer? How is Google defining CTR in Google Search Console in that case? Does pogosticking not count toward CTR in organic search?

Just to be clear, SEMRush won’t give you absolute traffic numbers — if that’s what you’re looking for, turn to SimilarWeb or Quantcast. SEMRush is best when you only care about search traffic and you want to compare search traffic patterns between sites. For that, SEMRush tends to be the most accurate.
Is it worth getting StumbleUpon traffic? I like Google Ad planner a lot. It is something that Google hasn’t promoted much. You would think it would be easy to find in Google Adwords, but it is not. The other thing I like about Adplanner is that (I think) it is reliable and accurate due to most websites using Analytics, Adwords and Adsense. With this data and the Google Searches, they have a large database of information to source its data.
That’s a good thing. But many of these same marketers just let visitors slip away once they click the “back” button or otherwise try to leave the site.

LSI stands for “Latent Semantic Indexing” – it’s the name of an algorithm that many people think Google uses. Google may or may not use it. But if they don’t, they definitely use something similar.

Websites produce traffic rankings and statistics based on those people who access the sites while using their toolbars and other means of online measurements. The difficulty with this is that it does not look at the complete traffic picture for a site. Large sites usually hire the services of companies such as the Nielsen NetRatings or Quantcast, but their reports are available only by subscription.
The rise of smart phones has also led to a dramatic increase in location specific searches. Tourists arriving in a new town can find travel guides and read up-to-date reviews in moments. If your car engine suddenly dies, you can find a local mechanic in a flash. And so on.
SEARCH Great step-by-step instructions, Brian. We actually tried your skyscraper technique in making content last year; but sadly forgot one crucial element: recording results. We’re going to do it again this year as I find that it was an effective and quick method for generating shareable ideas. Thanks a lot for always helping out!
Short answer: you want to look at niches that are related to that space. Obviously there aren’t any “office space rental” blogs out there. But there are plenty of real estate and small business blogs that cover office-related topics.
Just because you’re writing for someone else, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take as much care with what you write as you would on your own site.
We don’t need to get into all the technical stuff here, but this suggests to Google that these sites may have the same owner or are somehow managed by the same entity.
Great read, Brian, thanks! I’m new to the sales team at a cloud consulting company. We have great content for our users, but our traffic tells me you’re right. There seems to be so many influencers in my industry..guess I need to do some homework!

Alan : More Rankings Have you ever seen those Fiverr Gigs offering hundreds or thousands of backlinks in less than 3 days for $5? Don’t ever think about it. You get what you pay, and 5,000 low quality backlinks (most of them can’t be indexed) won’t work for you, especially if your keyword has some competition in the mid/high difficulty area. Just ignore them totally. I know they sound to good to be true, and so they are.
What is off-site SEO? This is very useful information about back links.
